The Atlanta Falcons and left tackle Jake Matthews have agreed to a five-year, $75 million extension, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Matthews' $15 million annual salary makes him the third-highest paid offensive lineman in the league behind Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan ($16 million), who signed his deal just ahead of Matthews, and Giants left tackle Nate Solder ($15.5 million).

Matthews, 26, was the Falcons' No. 6 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He has been the starting left tackle protecting Matt Ryan's blind side since Day 1 in the NFL and has missed just one game in his first four years in the league.

After a rocky start to his career, Matthews has emerged as a key cog in a Falcons offensive line that has been among the best in the league over the last couple of years. The Falcons O-line was ranked No. 2 overall in the NFL by Pro Football Focus last season and No. 6 in 2016.

The marked improvement of that unit has been instrumental in making Atlanta's offense among the best in the league for the last two seasons.

It's been a busy last couple of days' worth of transactions for the Falcons. They agreed to a contract adjustment with Julio Jones, who has ended his lockout and reported to training camp. They've also given extensions to head coach Dan Quinn and GM Thomas Dimitroff.

But even with Matthews locked up, the Falcons' offseason is still far from over. They are still looking to finalize extensions for two of their other young core pieces: defensive tackle Grady Jarrett and safety Ricardo Allen.
