Is Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan not getting his due?

Despite signing a five-year extension with Atlanta in 2018 worth $150 million—only to be outdone by Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers soon afterwards—many around the NFL still view the four-time Pro Bowler to be “underrated.”

“I think he's the most underrated quarterback in the NFL right now,” ESPN analyst Mina Kimes said on The Lefkoe Show on Tuesday morning.

“He was excellent. He was excellent by every statistical measure, by every advanced metric. He was a very, very good quarterback. Listen, he's got some of the best weapons in the NFL at this point.

Ryan has taken his fair share of criticism—with plenty derived from Atlanta's Super Bowl LI collapsing defeat to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. Additionally, the Falcons have only made postseason berths in six of Ryan's 11 seasons starting under center in Atlanta.

Ryan was selected third overall in the first round by the Falcons in the 2008 NFL Draft. Before that, he spent four years at Boston College.

Despite having yet to deliver a Vinci Lombardi trophy with the Falcons, Ryan remains the franchise's leader in passing yards and touchdowns—both by wide margins.

Matt Ryan is often inferiorly compared to NFL quarterback contemporaries of his generation like Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, Brady, Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers), Eli Manning (Giants), Matthew Stafford (Detroit), and Cam Newton (Carolina), among other top-tier quarterbacks.
