There is no question that the 2017 NFL season was a somewhat disappointing one for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan coming off his MVP campaign. Fortunately, there may be a bit of a silver lining to it as it appears that his numbers were heavily skewed by his teammates.

Ryan finished the year with a rather mediocre line of 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. However, according to Vincent Verhei of Football Outsiders, five of them were of no fault of his own.

Next, we subtract those interceptions that were tipped by receivers into the hands of defenders. Matt Ryan threw five interceptions that should have been caught by his own teammates. That wasn't just the most in the league, it was the most for any quarterback in a single season since Eli Manning also had five in 2010.

Although Ryan still dealt with his fair share of trouble in the red zone, throwing 20 touchdowns to just seven interceptions is starting not to look as bad. Of course, instances such as these happen more often than teams would like them too. However, it is clear that Ryan was plagued by the blunders made by his teammates.

On the bright side, Ryan did manage to top 4,000 passing yards for the seventh consecutive season in a row. Furthermore, there is a newfound sense of optimism that the Falcons will be able to get their issues on offense fixed. A good place to start will be making sure that the wideouts look the ball in before trying to make a play after the catch.
