Julio Jones selected a good time to erect a new NFL record. Not only did Jones help the Atlanta Falcons secure a playoff spot during last Sunday’s 22-10 home win against the Carolina Panthers, the wide receiver also set a new NFL mark for being the fastest player ever to generate 9,000 receiving yards.

Jones surpassed the 9,000 receiving yards mark in only 95 games, breaking the previous record held by Lance Alworth, who collected as many yards in 98 games. Against the Panthers, Jones pulled down five of 11 targets for 80 receiving yards.

Overall this season, Jones has 1,444 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Those touchdowns are his second fewest in a season in his career. That being said, Jones remains as the Falcons’ unquestioned top target downfield with 52 more targets than anyone on Atlanta’s roster this year, and he should continue to be that guy this coming Sunday in the NFC Wild Card tilt against the Los Angeles Rams.

Jones and the Falcons, who are eighth in the NFL in passing yards per game (249.4) are being motivated by the bad taste left in their mouths by their massive choke job in last February’s Super Bowl loss to the New England Patriots.

Jones surely would rather have a Super Bowl ring than an individual record.
