The Atlanta Falcons are nearing an agreement on a three-year extension with defensive tackle Tyeler Davison, per Vaughn McClure of ESPN:

The Falcons and defensive tackle Tyeler Davison are close to an extension that would keep him Atlanta for the next three seasons, source tells me. Davison was a hidden gem last season as a run stopper. He started 12 of 16 games and had 55 combined tackles and a sack. Falcons signed former New Orleans Saint to a one-year deal last season.

Davison was taken by the Saints in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Though he initially struggled to make much of an impact, Davison started in all 16 games for the Saints in 2017, forcing a pair of fumbles and racking up 31 combined tackles.

The 27-year-old was even more productive upon the move to Atlanta. Davison's 55 combined tackles last season marked a career high, and he also had four tackles for a loss.

Atlanta's defense was one of the more confusing units in football last season. Generally speaking, they lacked a consistent pass-rusher on the front four, and they finished 20th in terms of defensive DVOA, per Pro Football Outsiders.

However, the Falcons were just above the league average in terms of rushing DVOA thanks in part to Davison, and they showed the capacity for dominance when healthy. Atlanta bottled up Drew Brees and the Saints for three quarters during a Week 10 win at the Superdome, and they also held the San Francisco 49ers in check in Week 15.

The Falcons will count on Davison and the rest of the front line to make internal improvements to spark a turnaround in 2020. Atlanta went 7-9 last season.
