Fall Guys Steam player count exploded as the game got delisted on Steam and became an Epic Games Store exclusive.
Fall Guys went free-to-play earlier this week, which saw a surge of new players trying out the game for the first time. Mediatonic and Epic Games saw this coming and hoped to capitalize on this sudden increase in the player count by moving the game from Steam to the Epic Games Store. While player count skyrocketed on all platforms across the board, the game actually exploded on Steam as well in spite of the Epic exclusivity.
Fall Guys Ultimate Knockout was one of the hottest games to play back in 2020 and the first quarter of 2021. This just meant that everybody during that time was itching to get their hands on the game. Unfortunately, Fall Guys initially launched only on PC and PlayStation, limiting their reach and demographic. Because of these limitations, the player count decayed months following the game's initial release. But now that Fall Guys is free-to-play and available on all platforms, including Xbox and the Nintendo Switch, it’s no surprise that it’s back on the map.
Before Fall Guys became a free-to-play title, the game was available to purchase on Steam. This means that regardless of the game’s current exclusivity status, players who bought the game on Steam will still have access to the title. It seems that the sudden increase in interest in the game caused many of these early purchasers of the game to flock back to it on Steam, as the game experienced a year-long peak of more than fifty thousand concurrent users when the game went free-to-play. Some rewards and incentives were also doled out to encourage owners of the game to come back and play it to welcome the new players to the fold. The fact that the game supports cross-play and cross-progression helped keep the Steam version of the game afloat, as it allowed Steam users to play Fall Guys with their friends who picked it up for the first time earlier this week, even if they were playing on other platforms.
Fall Guys Season 1: Free For All is now available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
