Frank Gore, the NFL's third leading rusher of all time, plans to sign a one-day contract to retire as a San Francisco 49er. The 38-year old future Hall of Fame running back will return to the team that drafted him in his final move of his playing career.

This past week, on Bovada's Instagram account, Gore told Heidy Watney he “probably [will retire] in a couple of months.” Gore added that he and 49ers CEO Jed York are “still trying to figure out when I'm going to do my one-day contract [with the 49ers], to sign, do my retirement.”

Gore said he plans to seek a front office role somewhere in the league.

“And then we're going to also sit down, me and my agent, just talk about me working in the front office because I love looking at talent, and I love evaluating talent, and I love ball. And they know that I know football players, what it takes to be a football player.”

Frank Gore will retire as the third leading rusher in NFL history with exactly 16,000 yards over his 16-year career. That includes nine seasons where he rushed for 1,000 yards. He last played for the New York Jets in 2020, and hinted at a return to San Francisco at the end of that year. Gore left San Francisco following the 2014 season after 10 years as a 49er. He joined Indianapolis, where he played for three seasons, before finishing his career with one-year stints with Miami, Buffalo, and the Jets.
