Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Josh Oliver has been somewhat snakebitten during the early portion of his NFL career, with news coming down Thursday that he sustained a broken foot during training camp and will need to undergo surgery to repair the ailment, which has landed him on injured reserve, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Oliver, a third-round pick by Jacksonville in the 2019 NFL Draft out of San Jose State, played in just four games last season after sustaining a significant hamstring injury before the year. Having been a first-team All-MWC performer in 2018, Oliver's acclimation to the professional game resulted in him accruing just three receptions for 15 yards.

Even had Oliver stayed healthy, his path to playing time in 2020 may have been muddled in the wake of Tyler Eifert coming aboard. Now James O'Shaughnessy has the inside track on becoming Jacksonville's No. 2 tight end, although both Tyler Davis and Charles Clifford Jones remain on the roster.

While prognosticators have many concerns about the Jaguars' viability as a playoff team this upcoming year, they have a receiving corps of DJ Chark Jr., Dede Westbrook, and rookie Laviska Shenault Jr., that will give quarterback Gardner Minshew II options in the passing game.

Oliver would have figured to be another one of those options, but for the time being, he'll be out of the mix. The book hasn't been closed on him returning to action this season, but he'll certainly be sidelined when the Jaguars open the year at home Sept. 13 against the Indianapolis Colts.
