Former New York Jets quarterback Chad Pennington, if nothing else, was a more than competent gunslinger during his time in the National Football League. Now retired, being able to consume games with a keen eye, he has some thoughts on current Jets signal-caller Josh McCown.

For a lack of a better phrase, he is apparently a huge fan.

“I would love to see Josh be part of the equation for about three more years,” Pennington said. “I don’t know how long he wants to play. I could certainly see him continue to be able to stabilize the position and also be professional enough to understand when it is time to hand over the reins. He would be such a great asset in the room. I think that’s something that would benefit the Jets, to have his presence there.

“I would love to see him do that.”

Three more years?

Josh McCown, while fine-ish, is usually barely a torso by each season's end. Through no fault of his own — well, other than playing with disregard for his own body — McCown is often found on the injury list. Three more years of that, even if he plays well when healthy, might make New York fans cry a little bit on the inside.

Thing is, Chad Pennington isn't wrong with a lot of his assessment. McCown can be, even when hurt or no longer able to play on the field, a net-positive in the locker room.

Nevertheless, the Jets need to begin thinking about fixing that position for the future. McCown is certainly not that.
