Congratulations for not trying to get Dwight Howard. That's the message former long-time NBA coach Herb Brown would like to send the way of the Portland Trail Blazers.

Brown, brother of Larry Brown, was the Detroit Pistons head coach from 1975-78 and then an assistant with many teams through as recent as 2011.

He didn't hold back when discussing his thoughts about Howard.

Via OregonLive.com:

“I was very happy that (Blazers GM) Neil (Olshey) didn't sign Dwight Howard… I like guys that go out and play and practice hard all the time and don't always defray and blame things on someone else. He's a great talent. Howard's a great talent, but his game has never really improved.”

Many people have similar feelings about Howard. One of the true winners of the genetic lottery, it's not uncommon to feel that Howard never reached his true potential. The game evolved when Howard got to the league and back-to-the-basket scoring was much less common, but Howard never dominated as much as some would have liked to see.

Howard returns home next season to play for the Atlanta Hawks. That was a good get for the Hawks who lost Al Horford this summer and Howard will likely help them stay relevant among the best teams in the Eastern Conference.

Portland probably could have used him too. Maybe like how Brown feels, the Blazers just didn't think going after Dwight was worth it.
