George Russell says that Williams’ performance this Formula 1 season has allowed him to push the limits amid the team sitting comfortably at 8th place in the standings.
Russell is known to be a driver who makes very few mistakes on track. However, with Williams getting massive points on the board this season, he’s been allowed to be more experimental throughout the last few races.
The young Brit scored his first Formula 1 podium in the Belgian Grand Prix—since then, both he and teammate Nicholas Latifi have garnered enough points to have a comfortable lead ahead of backmarker rivals Haas Racing and Alfa Romeo.
Via Adam Cooper of Motorsport:
“I think the pressure has been sort of lifted off my shoulders for a while now for these first laps,” he said. “And I have more confidence to really attack it and go for it. And P20 to P14 was a strong start for me.”
“And I think, in this position now, where we are in the championship, we’ve got this small buffer it’s allowing me to go out there and really push the limits.”
Russell also notes that the confirmation of his transfer to Mercedes has lifted additional pressure off his shoulders. He reiterates that being able to have a very stable position on a personal level has allowed him to do things he normally wouldn’t do.
