Max Verstappen was just a few moments away from another Formula 1 victory when disaster struck. The Red Bull driver experienced an untimely tyre failure that led to his retirement from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

With just five laps to go and the lead firmly in hand, it looked as though the Red Bull wunderkind had things wrapped up. Max Verstappen was set to build on his lead atop the Formula 1 driver standings, as 7-time world champion Lewis Hamilton still trailed him both in the race and on the leaderboard. But it was not meant to be for Max on this day.

The frustrated Formula 1 driver was seen letting out some steam after the incident.

Things went from perfect to problematic in mere seconds, as the Red Bull driver went from full points and another race closer to taking home the Formula 1 trophy, to exiting with no points at all and surrendering his lead to his Mercedes rival.

Incredible drama in Baku. This could alter the course of the championship. Verstappen skulks over to his team, shaking his head non-stop in a state of simmering rage. “I think it’s a tyre issue. A tyre failure,” says Horner.

The race came to a halt after the incident, with his teammate Sergio Perez in the lead.
