The French driver initially swerved and eventually hit an Alpha Tauri car being driven by Daniil Kvyat before heading straight into the barriers. The medical team and marshalls swiftly came to Grosjean's aid headed by Medical Car driver Alan van der Merwe who also spoke regarding the incident.

“It was a big surprise. I have never seen so much fire. We took a moment or so to process. Romain started getting out, which was amazing after an accident like that. There was some relief when we got back here and he was OK. Everything worked as it should. Without one of those things, it could have been a very different outcome,” he said.

Romain Grosjean's accident eventually forced the race to be postponed for over an hour to allow the race stewards to attend to the barriers that were broken as a result of the crash.

The race ultimately restarted and pushed through once again following the same order on the grid at the time that the red flag was waved with Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton leading in the pole position followed by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, and Racing Point's Sergio Perez in third.
