Announced today by ILLFonic, the development team behind such asymmetrical multiplayer games as Friday the 13th and Predator: Hunting Grounds, comes another asymmetrical multiplayer game based on the popular 1984 supernatural thriller/comedy movie, Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed sets players back into the late 80s/early 90s era of the films where four players will have to assume the role of a newly enlisted ghostbuster and team up against one player-controlled ghost, who will use many different spooky tactics and spiritual abilities to foil the opposing players.

Players who are playing as a ghostbuster will have to work together and coordinate their efforts in order to capture the ghost using their authentic proton packs, as firing off protons wildly will cause more harm than good to the team. As the saying goes: “Don't cross the streams” still very much applies in this game.

Speaking of famous lines from the Ghostbusters films, players will be able to talk to Winston Zeddemore, who is voiced by Ernie Hudson, in order to acquire missions before jumping into a match. Even more so, Dan Aykroyd will be reprising his role as Ray Stantz to teach the players more about the various ghosts that players can witness during matches.

Lastly, despite the game being multiplayer-focused, the game will also support offline play with AI-controlled bots, allowing players to enjoy the game at a more casual pace without the stress of dealing with potentially uncooperative teammates.

Overall, the concept for this kind of game is very sound, as the Ghostbusters franchise has managed to gain a bit of reassurance over the years, thanks to the moderate success of the Ghostbusters: Afterlife movie. However, this game still has a lot to prove due to the game's main competition, Dead by Daylight, still dominating the asymmetrical multiplayer gaming space.

Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed is set to release in Q4 2022 for Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
