The New York Giants have waived cornerback Janoris Jenkins after a week filled with controversy, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

While the team was practicing on Wednesday, Jenkins was in the practice room responding to a fan on Twitter, who he called a derogatory slur. He did offer an apology, but it didn't seem too sincere as he doubled down on his word choice.

Retard is offensive to people with special needs, and there has been a big push from the Special Olympics and others to get the word out of everyday language.

Giants coach Pat Shurmur said on Friday in a statement that Jenkins' word choice did play into the decision by the team to release him.

“Obviously, what happened this week, and the refusal to acknowledge the inappropriate and offensive language, was the determining factor,” Giants coach Pat Shurmur said in a statement via Chris Bumbaca of USA Today.

Jenkins didn't seem that shaken up by the news of his release. After the team moved on, he sent out a tweet saying “best news ever.., thank you.”

Jenkins, on the field, was a real talent for the Giants. In 53 games, He picked off 12 passes with four of them coming this year. Once, he was one of the bright spots on a defense that has had all kinds of struggles. The now-released cornerback struggled to start 2019 but had churned out decent performances as of late.

At 31 years old, it's fair to wonder who will sign Jenkins, especially with his recent comments in mind.
