The New York Giants received some criticism for their decision to pass on a quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the draft in favor of a running back in Saquon Barkley. The rationale was that they missed out on getting greater value from a young quarterback, whom they could’ve used to step in for an aging Eli Manning in a few years’ time.

But former head coach Ben McAdoo is in favor of the Giants’ decision to pass on a quarterback since he also wasn’t completely convinced by any of the options on the board.

“With the guys that came out this year, I’m not surprised they went the route they went by not drafting a guy,” McAdoo told the New York Post. “I wouldn’t have stood on the table to draft any quarterback No. 2 either.”

McAdoo didn’t think there was an “Andrew Luck” in this class who was “head and shoulders” above everyone else. He voiced concerns about the throwing mechanics of Sam Darnold, who ended up going No. 3 overall to the Jets. He was also not sold on No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield, who went to the Browns, and actually had Josh Allen, who went No. 7 to the Bills, on top of his board based on his ceiling.

Considering McAdoo was the one who controversially benched Manning last season and ended his consecutive starts streak, he’s obviously got reservations about the 37-year-old. If McAdoo wouldn’t have picked a rookie, he didn’t specify what he would’ve done to fix the Giants quarterback position.

But that’s not McAdoo’s problem anymore. The Giants made their decision to pick Barkley and stick with Manning, and they just have to move on from there.
