The New York Giants drafted Daniel Jones with the intention to have him develop under Eli Manning, but the rookie quarterback could be getting more opportunities soon.

According to Pat Shurmur, Daniel Jones might start getting some first-team snaps. So far through training camp, Manning has gotten all of the reps with the first-teamers.

When the Giants used their sixth overall pick in this year's draft on Jones, fans of the team were in awe. At the time, Dwayne Haskins out of Ohio State was still available. Haskins ended up going 15th overall to the Washington Redskins.

Nonetheless, New York came into training camp with the plan to start Manning under center again. Recently, we were led to believe here was no quarterback competition going on between Manning and Jones.

Now, there's a chance Jones could get some snaps with the starters on offense. Whether that rekindles a quarterback competition remains to be seen. Shurmur could just be doing it to get a better look at his rookie quarterback.

Regardless, the 38-year-old Manning's window is rapidly closing as he has been declining in recent seasons. That leaves the door ajar for Jones to secure the starting gig at some point this season.

If anything, Jones is likely going to receive a ton of reps in the preseason. The progress he makes will be crucial to his chances of cracking the starting lineup this season.

The Giants don't have a championship roster, but it is time to begin moving forward to the future of the franchise. At some point, New York is going to have to see what it has in Jones this season. That moment may come sooner than later.
