The New York Giants have brought in the successor to quarterback Eli Manning with the arrival of quarterback Daniel Jones. It appears he has already started to assume his position of Manning's backup.

Jones was seen taking reps with the second team during OTAs recently. According to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, head coach Pat Shurmur is admittedly impressed with what he has seen so far:

“He obviously has a great foundation for playing the position,” Shurmur said of Jones. “We gave him a small group of plays the first day of rookie minicamp. Then, we gave him another group and another group. We kept piling on. I think he is doing a good job sorting through it and learning the details of the position. You never totally know where a player is when you get him. He was ready to compete when he got here. It was just a matter of him learning how we do it here.”

It is no secret that the Giants have caught plenty of flak for their decisions under center in recent years. In the midst of Manning's struggles, they were criticized for not bringing his future backup sooner after opting to take running back Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft the year before. The jury is still out on whether or not Jones is the solution.

Regardless, it is clear that the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft is off to a promising start in New York. The coaching staff has indicated that they will be patient with his development moving forward. Although the Giants would like to take their time with his progression, he must be prepared to play at any moment in the 2019 NFL season given the unpredictable nature that has surrounded the team in recent years. The offense was able to establish a solid run game behind Barkley last season. Only time will tell if Jones will be able to supplement it with a viable passing attack.
