The general consensus has been that 2019 will be Eli Manning's last season with the New York Giants and that his successor, whom we now know is Duke quarterback Daniel Jones, will take over in 2020.

But Giants general manager Dave Gettleman says that might not be the case.

As a matter of fact, Gettleman says it could be another three years before Jones assumes the starting role under center. So, basically, like Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay:

“Maybe we’re going to be the Green Bay Model, where Rodgers sat for three years. Who knows?” said Gettleman, according to Ryan Dunleavy of NJ Advance Media. “You can never have too many good players at one position.”

To be fair to Gettleman, the remark was tongue-in-cheek, but it is still a comment that is likely to raise some hairs with Giants fans who have not exactly been thrilled with the way that Gettleman has done his job since being hired in December 2017.

Regardless of how it works, Gettleman believes that Jones will be New York's signal-caller of the future:

“We drafted a quarterback that we believe is a franchise quarterback,” Gettleman said. “That’s really the long and the short of it.”

Whether or not that's true remains to be seen, as Jones was behind Dwayne Haskins and Drew Lock—both of whom were available when the Giants took Jones at No. 6 during Thursday night's NFL Draft—on most draft boards.

Jones is coming off of a senior campaign in which he threw for 2,674 yards, 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
