There were plenty of moments when the New York Giants knew the 2017 NFL season was going down the drain. However, they hit rock bottom when head coach Ben McAdoo decided to end quarterback Eli Manning's start streak in favor of quarterback Geno Smith prior to Week 13.

When rumors about Manning's benching began to swirl, many assumed the Giants would give rookie quarterback Davis Webb a shot. It appears even Webb had every reason to think so as well.

He said during an appearance on WFAN that McAdoo told him he was the starter moving forward.

“Hey, the next three weeks, you’re in,” Webb recalled McAdoo saying.

“So I was ready to rock ‘n’ roll, and I was excited,” Webb said. “But at the same time, that was a rough day because Eli’s been the best teammate I’ve ever had. So I was really hurting for him.”

Smith has seemingly responded to Webb's claims with a post on Twitter.

Webb's comments certainly do not seem too far-fetched. New York invested a third-round pick on him during the 2017 NFL Draft likely as a potential project player. It would have made sense for them to see how well he performed in order to determine if he could have at least been a viable backup option. Instead, they went with Smith who had gotten his fair share of chances to prove himself during the first four seasons of his career.

Regardless of whether or not it is true, it just goes to show the kind of turmoil that had existed in the Giants' locker room at that point.  Fortunately, it is something that they should not have to worry about any longer with the new regime. Smith is now a backup with the Los Angeles Chargers while Webb is still looking to make his bones as Manning's potential protege.
