The New York Giants made headlines when they passed on a slew of promising quarterback prospects to take former Penn State running back Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Many respected the move since Barkley was widely considered the best overall player in the draft.

However, it was likely indicative of the confidence they have under center with quarterback Eli Manning. Although the new coaching staff has confirmed Manning's status as the starter, Davis Webb hopes to one day become his successor, according to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post.

“I want to be a good player,’’ Webb said. “I’m not there yet. I want to be good and I’m gonna try to do as much as I can to get good.’’

It is hard to imagine that New York has given any indication about his status as a potential future starter. Despite being picked in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the former regime of Jerry Reese and Ben McAdoo, he was not even given any playing time when Manning was benched.

Fortunately, he still managed to impress fellow teammates such as safety Landon Collins, and it appears he has done the same for his new coaching staff. However, he will still face some competition for the backup job. The new regime made sure to select a raw quarterback prospect of their own in the form of Kyle Lauletta with a fourth-round pick. That said, it will be interesting to see which player gains the inside track on becoming Manning's successor.
