New York Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker is almost certainly going to be released by the G-Men following his arrest for robbery with a firearm.

Someone in Baker's camp told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano the 22-year-old is anticipating he will be released, with Giants general manager David Gettleman also hinting the team was cutting ties:

“All I can say to that: In life, there’s timing that’s involved,” Gettleman said on Wednesday morning. “In life, there’s timing. That’s how I’ll respond to that.”

The “timing,” in New York's case, might be related to financials. Vacchiano explained Baker is not due to receive his first weekly check until next week:

The timing, in this case, is obvious. Though Baker doesn’t count against the Giants’ roster while he’s on the Commissioner’s exempt list, the team will still have to pay his $973,442 salary. But NFL players don’t start receiving pay checks until the regular season, so Baker’s weekly checks of $57,261 don’t start coming until next week.

In essence, the Giants could essentially cut the 2019 first-round pick with relative impunity.

Both Baker and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar were arrested in May, though prosecutors dropped the case against Dunbar.

Baker will still face four charges, which could essentially amount to life in prison. Gettleman said the situation was “disappointing” (via Vacchiano):

“There was nothing in DeAndre’s background that would suggest these things would happen,” Gettleman said. “So it’s disappointing on a variety of levels. It’s disappointing and I guess what it teaches us all is nothing’s 100% except death and taxes. It’s disappointing. I’d be lying if I said anything less. It’s disappointing, but it’s life.”

The Giants and rookie head coach Joe Judge will have to hope their depth can make the difference in the secondary, particularly considering it was expected Baker would start opposite James Bradberry.
