The New York Giants supposedly had a position battle this offseason at right tackle with second-year lineman Chad Wheeler expected to push former top-10 pick Ereck Flowers for the job. However, it seems as though Flowers has a firm grasp of the starting job heading into training camp.

As Ryan Dunleavy of NJ.com points out, Flowers took every first-team rep at right tackle during OTAs and mandatory minicamp while Wheeler worked with the second team.

It’s been quite a roller-coaster ride for Flowers over the past couple of months. It looked as if his days in New York were numbered as the team was hoping to move him during the draft, but they were unsuccessful.

Flowers also missed time during the start of offseason workouts as he was supposedly upset about big-money signing Nate Solder taking over for him at left tackle. After all that drama, though, it seems as if Flowers has gotten his act together and looks primed to secure a starting spot in the Giants’ O-line after all.

But while that starting spot is Flowers’ to lose, he still has some way to go toward proving himself both on and off the field. He must show he’s matured after some troubling incidents in his past and also display more consistency in his new role on the right side of the Giants line as opposed to his performances protecting Eli Manning’s blindside.

If Flowers can successfully do those things, though, he could end up playing a pivotal role for the Giants this season, not to mention earning himself a potentially huge payday as he hits free agency next year.
