San Francisco Giants third baseman Evan Longoria could possibly be playing in his final season in the majors.

As it stands, Longoria may hit free agency after the ongoing season, as he has a $13 million team option for the 2023 campaign. There is a $5 million buyout for the season as well.

Overall, Longoria has not yet reached a final decision on whether he plans to call it a career following the 2022 season.

“I’m trying not to think about it, because I haven’t made up my mind,” Longoria told The San Francisco Chronicle.”I haven’t decided. It’s like some days, I feel good and I feel like I could play for another five years. And then there are other days where I come in here and I feel like I’m 100 years old and like, ‘This is it.'”

Longoria has had quite a career over his runs with the Tampa Bay Rays and Giants, which include a trio of All-Star nods to go along with three Gold Glove Award honors at third base.

In the big picture, Longoria remains conflicted on just what he will opt to do following the season. If he elects to retire from MLB, he will walk away from the game without any notable regrets.

“If I did decide not to play, I would have been happy with what I have accomplished in this game, without a doubt,” Longoria said. “If I did decide to play, it obviously would have to be an opportunity that really makes sense for my family.

“Really, the last three years have been probably the three hardest years of baseball that I’ve ever had to play in terms of my body and what I’ve gone through with injuries, but also just being away from my family (in Arizona). They haven’t been here at all. I would need a situation where they’re happy.”

Longoria has had a roller-coaster 2022 campaign so far, which includes being sidelined for the early portions of the year after undergoing surgery on his right index finger. He has picked up his form a bit as of late, as he posted a .274 batting average in 23 total games played in June.

The Giants currently sit in third place in the NL West standings with a 40-34 record.
