All eyes are seemingly on Oregon Ducks quarterback Justin Herbert. Well, eyes of the New York Giants at least – including that of Giants general manager Dave Gettleman, who swung by Oregon’s match with the Utah Utes last Saturday in Salt Lake City to have a first-hand look at Herbert.

Via Andrew Haubner of USA TODAY:

While the Giants still have Eli Manning, the veteran is clearly not playing up to snuff, which is greatly evidenced by the team’s 1-7 record after nine weeks of the 2018 NFL season.

Herbert is being generally considered as the finest 2019 NFL Draft prospect, and with the Giants on pace to get a high draft pick next year, the Ducks’ signal-caller is going to be linked with New York for months to come.

Gettleman must be impressed with what he saw from Justin Herbert against the Utes. Herbert threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions on 20-of-30 pass completions, though, his effort was not enough to avoid a 32-25 road loss. That defeat and the Washington State Cougars’ win over the Colorado Buffaloes have eliminated the Ducks from contending for the Pac-12 North division title.

Herbert could have done more damage to Utah if it weren’t for his poor protection unit, which allowed four sacks – coincidentally an issue that the Giants are having this season. New York has surrendered the third-most quarterback takedowns this season with 31.

Herbert, however, can opt to return to Eugene after this NCAA season to use up his last year of eligibility. If that’s going to be the case, the Giants will have to come up with another plan for a quarterback change.
