New York Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones has been in the news a lot this week after some inflammatory comments made by Baker Mayfield, and now he's receiving backup from an unlikely source.

Many of Jones' teammates spoke up in his defense after Mayfield said he was surprised Jones was drafted so early, and now he's getting support from a member of his crosstown rival. New York Jets receiver Jamison Crowder recently spoke highly of Jones, per Matt Stypulkoski of NJ.com.

“I’ve built a relationship with him, I text him from time to time and we worked out a little bit in the offseason,” Crowder said. “So that’s why I know … he has the potential to be a great quarterback in this league. It’s just going to be him getting that experience and just growing as a professional player.”

Crowder and Jones are both Duke alums, so their connection makes some sense. Jones has faced a lot of scrutiny since getting drafted sixth overall, but Crowder thinks he'll be able to handle it.

“He’s just real cool, calm, collected type individual,” Crowder said. “So I think that he has the right mindset, the right mentality to handle it. I’m pretty sure the New Yorkers have been giving him a hard time, but he’s a good guy and … I know he’s going to work hard and he’s going to be able to take whatever is thrown his way.”

You have to develop thick skin quickly to thrive in the New York media market, and it seems like Jones has done an excellent job of handling it all. He's been playing well in the preseason so far, and he could be breathing down Eli Manning's neck for the starting job before too long.
