The New York Giants' defense needs to step up in 2019. New York appears set to roll with Eli Manning under center for at least one more season, and he'll need a strong defense backing him up if he's going to be successful.

With Olivier Vernon gone and traded to the Browns and several other veterans like Landon Collins departing in free agency, the Giants' defense will look a lot different next season. To help replace Collins, the Giants added safety Jabrill Peppers in that trade with Cleveland. Peppers will be tasked with filling Collins' role, which means New York's secondary will be a lot younger next season.

In addition to Peppers, New York also added cornerback DeAndre Baker in the first round from Georgia last month. Baker will likely be counted on to be an instant starter, and he's only 21. The Giants also have youngsters like Sam Beal and Grant Haley who could play roles in the secondary.

Janoris Jenkins is the one established veteran in the secondary, and he'll likely be starting opposite Baker on the outside. Jenkins isn't phased by all the youth, and in fact he's looking forward to the opportunity to help coach everybody up.

Jenkins said “he is embracing being a mentor to all the young cornerbacks on the team,” after practice Monday, per Paul Schwartz of the New York Post.

That's music to the ears of Giants fans. If Jenkins could take Baker and another player or two under his wing, it would be huge. Jenkins is a seven-year veteran who has seen a lot, and surely has a lot of wisdom to impart.

The Giants' secondary is talented, and it'll be interesting to see if they can put it all together.
