In the first few months of the NFL offseason, one of the primary focuses around the New York Giants has been the long-term future of star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who is in the fifth-year option of his rookie deal. It has prompted questions whether the team is working toward hammering out a new extension with him prior to the start of the 2018 campaign.

This chatter has remained a bit dormant in the weeks leading into the 2018 NFL Draft, but have once again picked back up with start of training camp now being less than two weeks away. According to Dan Duggan of the Athletic, team co-owner John Mara stated bluntly that a new contract with Beckham Jr. will get done when he believes it is appropriate to do so.

There doesn’t appear to be any urgency to get a new extension in place with Beckham Jr. at this point. Instead, management’s focus looks to have shifted toward preparing the team for the upcoming season with the offseason workouts set to get underway with the preseason just over two months from now. This doesn’t dwindle down the importance that the team has had getting a new contract for their best offensive talent.

Beckham Jr.’s desire to stay with the team has altered in any manner over the last few months despite the previous trade rumors that were quickly dashed several weeks ago. The difficult part in the process will be working toward an agreeable amount on the deal as the All-Pro wideout is reportedly eyeing an annual salary of at least $20 million per year that would make him the highest-paid wide receiver in the league along with possibly topping $100 million in the overall contract.

Although Beckham’s talent on the field has more than proved that he deserves that type of money, the only issue has been his behavior both and off the field. If the Giants are confident that these previous problems are behind him, a new extension could be worked out at some point in the coming months.
