New York Giants star wideout Odell Beckham Jr. made headlines for the wrong reasons with his recent interview on ESPN where he called out his team. Team owner John Mara clearly didn’t appreciate that move by the superstar and believes OBJ should focus more on his on-field play as opposed to his off-field comments.

“I wish he would create the headlines by his play on the field as opposed to what he says and what he does off the field,” Mara said per Dan Graziano of ESPN. “I think he needs to do a little more playing and a little less talking.”

After some initial hesitation, Mara and the Giants ultimately decided to hand Beckham the massive long-term contract extension he was clamoring for this past offseason. Shortly after signing that deal, Mara said he expects Beckham to be a “leader” on the team moving forward.

To Beckham’s credit, he seems to be doing his best to hold up his end of the bargain. Unfortunately, though, his preferred leadership style of publicly calling out his team isn’t exactly what Mara had in mind, and he’s chosen quite a poor way of saying it to his superstar.

It remains to be seen how Beckham will take these comments by the team owner effectively telling him to shut up and play. Given how tense things are within the Giants following their disappointing 1-5 start, this could potentially be yet another contentious issue that the organization must have to deal with, which is the last thing they need considering their on-field struggles.
