The New York Giants made headlines with today's benching of veteran quarterback Eli Manning. With the 2017 NFL season officially down the drain, it seems the Giants are officially throwing in the towel after head coach Ben McAdoo expressed their desire to play some of the backups for the final stretch.

As a result, Manning's streak of 210 regular-season games starting under center will officially come to an end versus the Oakland Raiders. Among those to express their disappointment is Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner, during an appearance on NFL Network's Up To the Minute Live:

“To me, shame on the Giants. This is one of those things to me that you need to start Eli with the idea of we're going to try to win every game. If it gets sideways, then maybe you go to the young guys but this isn't something where you go to Eli and say we're definitely going to play these other guys. This guy has earned the right to compete every game that he's there in my opinion because it's not just him. If it was just Eli Manning, and he wasn't playing well and the rest of the team was there, I'd understand making the change. This is so much better than that. To me it's amazing it has come to this for a guy who has really been a model for that organization. … I'm just disappointed that it came to this.”

Interestingly enough, Warner was the last quarterback to start under center for New York before Manning's streak began, so it is no surprise to see him come to the defense of his former teammate. Furthermore, it is clear that the Giants issues this season went far beyond their franchise quarterback.

Warner also credited Manning with how he has handled the looming situation. McAdoo had apparently approached Manning about potentially starting just to keep his streak alive before inserting the backups later in the game; however, the two-time Super Bowl winner declined the offer. Regardless of how the rest of this season plays out, it is evident that there are likely major personnel changes on the horizon.
