On Wednesday afternoon, the New York Giants and general manager Dave Gettleman happily announced that they officially acquired former Los Angeles Rams star inside linebacker Alec Ogletree.

The Giants sent a fourth-round and sixth-round draft picks to the Rams in order to pick up Ogletree, who Gettleman says will serve as the quarterback of New York's defense during the 2018-19 season.

Via a tweet on Wednesday by the official New York Giants account:

“We’re very excited to have made the trade for Alec,” Gettleman said during a press conference with the media. “He gives us our defensive quarterback. He was a two-time captain with the Rams, voted on by his teammates. He’s a leader, and that’s very important to us. Just as important, he’s a quality three-down MIKE linebacker. We’re just thrilled to have him.”

Ogletree, who was selected in the first round by the Rams in the 2013 NFL Draft, led the team in tackles four of the five seasons he was with the club. The lone season he did not lead the team in tackles was in the 2015 season because he only played in four games due to a broken fibula.

“When you get a player of this quality, you can do it. Alec is 26. He’s young, he’s under contract for the next four years. We really thought he was a great guy to add,” Gettleman said.

Last season for Los Angeles, Ogletree had 95 tackles, two quarterback sacks, and one interception that was returned 41 yards for a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals. The 26-year-old linebacker immediately upgrades the Giants' front seven and should thrive under new defensive coordinator James Bettcher.
