The New York Giants had one of the poorest and most disappointing defenses last season, particularly down the field, but they are getting a boost in their secondary upon taking cornerback Sam Beal in the third round of the recent NFL supplemental draft.

According to Giants, Beal is now officially part of the team after signing a four-year contract with New York (h/t Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk).

Cornerback Sam Beal joined the team after the Giants selected him in the third round of last year’s supplemental draft and the Giants announced on Monday that he has agreed to a four-year rookie deal with the team.

Beal was originally projected to be a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, but issues with his academics at Western Michigan led to him being labeled ineligible for the 2018 NCAA football season. The supplemental draft allows players like Beal to skip a year-long wait so that they could get in the NFL the soonest possible time.

Beal will join Janoris Jenkins and Eli Apple in the Giants’ secondary and will look to carve out a role, perhaps as a possible replacement for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who was released by the Giants back in March.

Beal could be considered as a draft steal for the Giants, albeit via an unconventional route. The 21-year-old Beal was a bona fide stud last season for the Broncos, as he consistently put the clamps on his assignments in the MAC while also scaring opposing quarterbacks from targeting his side of the field.

In his junior year at Western Michigan, Beal had 22 total tackles and a pair of interceptions, including this one off of now New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold.
