Prior to the May 5 deadline, the New York Giants have opted to pick up tight end Evan Engram's fifth-year option, ensuring he stays in New York until the end of the 2021 season barring a trade.

The fifth-year option gives Engram some security after rumors of a trade have swirled in recent weeks. Earlier this April, Vincent Frank of Forbes reported that the San Fransisco 49ers had reportedly shown interest in acquiring Engram as a second tight end behind George Kittle. The Giants, however, have previously denied that the team considered moving on from Engram.

As for Engram, the former Ole Miss star is heading into his fourth NFL season. He is set to make around $6 million in 2020.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound tight end was drafted in the first round in 2017 and has quickly separated himself as one of the better tight ends in the league. However, while the talent is clearly there for Engram, the young tight end has struggled to stay healthy for the Giants.

After missing five games in 2018, a foot injury derailed Engram's 2019 season, adding to his ever-growing list of career injuries three seasons in.

Still, in eight games and six starts last campaign, Engram recorded 44 catches for 467 yards and three touchdowns.

Along with Evan Engram, the Giants also opted to exercise the fifth-year option of defensive back Jabrill Peppers.

Engram has been home in Atlanta rehabbing and working out while NFL facilities have been shut down by the coronavirus crisis. If he can stay healthy, he should be an important piece to the development of young franchise quarterback Daniel Jones.
