New York Giants rookie running back Saquon Barkley suffered a minor setback in practice on Monday after suffering a mild strain in his left leg while attempting to make a catch.

In light of that, head coach Pat Shurmur has voiced that the team will move forward wisely with handling the injury to avoid any possible setbacks.

This should all but affirm that he will not be playing in this week's preseason action against the Detriot Lions on Friday night. He is dealing with an injury that could linger on if not handled on correctly that would affect his entire rookie campaign and force him to miss some time. The Giants are hoping that Barkley can lead their backfield as a highly productive runner and receiving option, which he put on display during his collegiate career.

Barkley had shown some flash of potential in the first preseason game with an impressive 39-yard run on his first carry of the game that saw him make some strong cuts while blowing past several defenders. It showed that he has tremendous vision and burst that could see him be a major factor on the field for New York as one of their primary contributors. This may have been a small sample size; there was much to take away from how that play unfolded with him creating the big play with his speed and athleticism.

The Giants will likely choose to keep Barkley out of the lineup for the rest of the preseason to have him on the field to begin the 2018 campaign. He is currently dealing with an injury that could easily linger on if not handled properly, which playing in any of the remaining preseason games may lead to him possibly suffering a setback in some fashion. Nonetheless, it is a situation that the team will monitor closely over the next few weeks.
