Former New York Giants running back Orleans Darkwa has not had much luck finding a new home this offseason. Fortunately, he may be one step closer to making his return.
Darkwa underwent surgery to remove a plate in his leg last month. He announced that he is now cleared to play with a post on Twitter:

This is an encouraging development for Darkwa's prospects. The plate was initially inserted to help repair a fractured leg he suffered during the 2016 season. He can now look forward to capitalizing on his best year yet.
Darkwa took on a central role in New York's injury-riddled offense. He finished the 2017 campaign as the Giants' rushing leader after taking 171 carries for 751 yards and five touchdowns. He also managed to tack on 19 catches for 116 yards.
Unfortunately, it appears that the team has gone in a different direction this offseason. Not only did they select running back Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, but they fortified the backfield with the addition of veteran running back Jonathan Stewart. It is highly unlikely he returns to New York.
Darkwa met with the New England Patriots earlier this offseason. However, it is clear that the Patriots have more than enough talent in their backfield at this time with Rex Burkhead, James White, Jeremy Hill, and rookie Sony Michel. As a result, he may have to look elsewhere for a shot at an integral role in the 2018 season. Given the fragility of the position, Darkwa's opportunity may come sooner than later.
