Everyone knows what New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley was able to do as a rookie and according to Pro Football Focus finished the season as one of the most explosive running backs in the league.

Barkley finished last year with 31 explosive runs of at least ten yards which was tied for the fifth most among running backs in the league. The former Penn State star ran for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns while averaging five yards per rush. He was also a big threat out of the backfield catching 91 passes for 721 yards and four touchdowns.

He was a focal point of the offense last year and Giants coach Pat Shurmur wouldn't rule out him having an even bigger role this season.

“I don’t know about more,” said Shurmur, skirting whether or not a larger role for Barkley was on tap via Giants Wire. “He had a big load a year ago. It makes sense for us to hand him the ball, and we can throw it to him as well. He will be involved, for sure.”

Shurmur wants to spread the ball out more but also knows that it will be Barkley who is the focal point of the offense again.

“I wouldn’t say manage [Barkley’s load], but we will try and spread the ball. We have other good players that should touch the ball as well,” Shurmur said.

The expectations for Barkley should be even higher this season and the goals for explosive runs should be at least 31 in 2019.
