New York Giants No. 6 overall pick and quarterback Daniel Jones impressed during his four-games of preseason football. So much so that legendary Giants quarterback Phil Simms said, “I like what I see, and what I see is real,” on the “Simms and the Mad Dog” show on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio channel on Thursday.

Jones is currently the backup quarterback behind Eli Manning. On when he'll play, Simms suggests it'll be if Manning struggles in 2019, he said:

“We’re all going to know when the time is there for him to play. And it’s going to be Eli Manning is maybe struggling, not doing something that we like, causes them to lose a game or two, the team’s not winning enough. Everybody’s going to come to the conclusion: ‘This could be the week, it’s coming soon.’ We’re going to know.”

Of course, Jones may not play at all as a rookie. Manning may turn things around with head coach Pat Shurmur conducting the New York offense. Said Simms:

“You know, there is a chance he [Jones] might not get to play the whole year. If the Giants think they can make the playoffs they’ll sacrifice the year to let Eli Manning be the quarterback.”

Manning is slated as the starter for the Giants' regular-season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

But, with Jones recording a 137.7 passer rating in the preseason and passing the eye test, Manning isn't a sure thing to play the entirety of the 2019 season; especially if he struggles.
