Former Buffalo Bills and New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, now an NFL analyst for ESPN, went on the record on Monday claiming New York Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones is the best in the Big Apple.

Via USA TODAY Sports' Giants Wire:

“The reason I’m saying it is because I think his fundamentals are much better,” Ryan said Monday on ESPN’s “Get Up.” per The Post. “I love Sam Darnold, don’t get me wrong. I still think he’s going to be a tremendous player. But I think this guy right here [Jones] has got competitive greatness in him. I think he’s going to be a superstar.”

Ryan, 56, a brash and outspoken career football player and coach, led the Jets to back-to-back conference championship appeared in 2009-10. After being canned in 2014, Ryan moved the western New York to coach the Bills for two seasons. Since then, Ryan has appeared on ESPN and the “Get Up” program delivering his NFL takes.

Jones was selected out of Duke University by the Giants with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft in April, much to the chagrin of fans earlier in the year. However, after being handed the reins of New York's offense as the starting signal-caller in the team's Week 3 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jones proved himself an invaluable part of his franchise's future under center. Veteran quarterback Eli Manning started the Giants' first two games—both losses—and it appears as though the G-Men have their new starter for the next decade in Jones.

Ryan once coached Mark Sanchez, the Jets' quarterback, and has been complimentary of current Gang Green QB Sam Darnold, sidelined with mono at the moment. Nonetheless, the two downstate New York (or New Jersey, rather) franchises might have a new king of Broadway after Jones' starry debut on Sunday.
