The New York Giants have lost star running back Saquon Barkley for the remainder of the 2020 season.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the former No. 2 overall pick suffered a torn ACL during Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Saquon Barkley will undergo immediate surgery to repair the ligament in his right knee.

Barkley sustained the injury at the start of the second quarter after a five-yard gain, and was immediately doubled over in pain on the sidelines.

The former Penn State star had to be carted off the field, and will indeed be sidelined for the remainder of the year after a significant knee injury.

This is a tremendous blow, both for the Giants as well as for Saquon Barkley, personally.

Barkley immediately established himself as one of the top backs in the league after a rookie season in which he tallied over 2,000 yards from scrimmage in addition to 15 total touchdowns.

Barkley seemed ready to take the league by storm again in 2019, though there were some roadblocks. He injured his ankle in a Week 3 win over the Tap Bay Buccaneers and–while still rushing for over 1,000 yards in 13 games–seemed to lack some of the explosiveness that defined his rookie season.

But the Giants hoped Saquon Barkley would be ready to take on the 2020 season after an offseason of healing. He was also named a team captain by rookie head coach Joe Judge.

Instead, Giants fans will have to wait until next year to see Barkley return to the gridiron.
