Former New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz said he is followed by one off-field decision, one that still “haunts” him to this day.

Cruz was included in a cast Giants players who flew to Miami prior to a Wild Card game against the Green Bay Packers during the 2016 NFL season. The players even posed for a picture on the beach, prompting a ton of scrutiny from the media.

The Giants were subsequently crushed by the Packers, and the image suddenly became synonymous with an apparent lack of preparedness. For Cruz, it also seems to be a reminder of what might have been, via Jaclyn Hendricks of the New York Post.

“If this was 1999, no one would have known about the trip, we would have went, had a great time, come back,” Cruz said. “And then had we won the game, that’s the part that kind of bothers me, too. If we won the game, they’d be like, ‘Go to Miami every week, apparently that’s the good luck charm.’ The fact that we lost, left a bad taste in everybody’s mouth.”

Though Cruz spoke about the “what if” factor as it related to that particular game, it is also one of the final memories many fans have of his time in the NFL.

The Giants cut ties with Cruz after the season, and he has not returned to the league since. The undrafted wideout was beloved in the Big Apple for his story and salsa dance after every touchdown grab, but Cruz might argue the photo has tainted his legacy and memory in New York.
