The New York Giants were plagued with the injury bug on Wednesday after losing safety Xavier McKinney and linebacker David Mayo in practice. The team has since provided some more clarity on their outlook for the 2020 NFL season.

The Giants announced that the rookie McKinney is slated to undergo surgery to repair a fracture on his left foot, via the team's official website:

McKinney is scheduled to undergo surgery later this afternoon at Hospital for Special Surgery. Foot specialist Dr. Martin O'Malley will perform the procedure.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Xavier McKinney is expected to miss at least 10 weeks with broken metatarsal.

With the 2020 campaign just weeks away, the timetable for Xavier McKinney's injury means he is slated to miss more than half the season. This update deals a crushing blow to a Giants' defense that was hoping to see a big leap from this young group.

Losing McKinney for the bulk of the season puts a damper in New York's plans in the secondary. The former first-team All-SEC selection out of Alabama was expected to compete for a starting job in training camp. At the very least, the second-round pick was primed for an integral role in the rotation to begin his career.

Meanwhile, Mayo suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee and is also scheduled to undergo surgery. This leaves New York without a valuable member of their linebacker corps after he enjoyed a career year in the 2019 campaign with 80 tackles and 2.0 sacks while starting in 13 games.
