The R&A has decided to cancel The Open in 2020 due to the current crisis amid this novel coronavirus pandemic. The 149th Open is now slated to take place at Royal St George’s from 11-18 July 2021 and The 150th Open at St. Andrews from 10-17 July 2022.

“We care deeply about this historic championship and it is with a heavy heart that we have cancelled the open for the first time since WWII,”  Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The R&A, said in an official statement. “This will be disappointing for a great many people but this pandemic is severely affecting the UK and we have to act responsibly to protect the health and well-being of everyone involved. It is the right thing to do.”

“I can assure everyone that we have explored every option for playing The Open this year but it is not going to be possible.”

The R&A will transfer over tickets and hospitality packages purchased for this Championship in 2020 to The Open in 2021. Those who no longer wish to (or are able to) attend in 2021 can receive a full refund.

This is now one of the many events that have been affected by this global pandemic. First, it was Augusta National postponing The Masters. The PGA Championship at San Francisco’s TPC Harding Park was one of the next potential closures.

The U.S. Open came in jeopardy when an executive order closed Winged Foot, putting a sudden stop to all preparations for this event.
