Gregg Marshall resigned his position as head basketball coach at Wichita State on Tuesday morning following allegations of physical and verbal abuse. The parting was inevitable, according to a report from Stadium's Jeff Goodman, but Marshall is still walking away with a $7.75 million settlement.

One former Wichita State player spoke with Goodman privately, noting that this is a move that should have been made long ago:

“It should have been done years ago, but he shouldn’t have gotten anything on the way out,” the player said of Gregg Marshall. “That’s a joke.”

The allegations levied against Marshall are quite serious. He reportedly punched one of his former players, Shaq Morris, during practice. Additional reports indicate that Marshall choked his former assistant coach, Kyle Lindsted. Other allegations were verbal and racially charged, according to most accounts.

Marshall had been the head coach at Wichita State for 13 years. Notably, though, ten players have transferred from the program in the past two seasons, including seven this offseason.

Marshall offered the following statement on his resignation:

“This was a difficult decision, but one I feel was necessary for my family, the university and, most importantly, the student-athletes,” Gregg Marshall said in a statement, via thesunflower.com. “I remain grateful for my years spent at Wichita State. I wish to thank the coaches, student-athletes, the university, the community, and all of Shocker Nation for their unending dedication, support and loyalty. I am incredibly proud of this men’s basketball program and all it has achieved over the past 14 years and am confident of its continued success.”

Assistant coach Isaac Brown will take over as the Shockers interim head coach for the coming season, according to multiple reports. WSU kicks off their campaign in eight days with a matchup against Utah State in the Crossover Classic.
