Last year during the Warriors‘ historic 73-win season, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was full of praise for Golden State, a team with which San Antonio was directly competing. The Warriors even surpassed the 70-win threshold in a game against the Spurs in April, yet despite the loss, Popovich like the rest of us was just in awe of the brilliance of Golden State. This amazement of the Warriors led Popovich to call the Warriors “best team on the planet.”

From the Associated Press:

“You can't make mistakes against these guys,” coach Gregg Popovich said. “Best team on the planet. If you lose your concentration defensively or you shoot ill-advised shots or don't move the ball and give it back to them quickly, you're in big trouble.”

A year has passed since then but Popovich hasn't changed his opinion of the Warriors. In fact, he is still calling them the “best team on the planet.”

The Warriors are a slightly different team from last year as they have added Kevin Durant and re-tooled their bench with players like JaVale McGee and David West, but Popovich's sentiment should still ring true. Although they haven't won as many games this season, the addition of Durant makes the Warriors an even stronger team than they were last year. Plus similar to last season, the Warriors have the best record in the league and will have home-court throughout the postseason.

“Best team on the planet” may seem a bit overboard when describing the Warriors, but as of right now it is hard to argue with Popovich's assertion about Golden State.
