Memphis Grizzlies rookie point guard Ja Morant is mulling the possibility of participating in the 2020 Slam Dunk Contest as part of the upcoming All-Star Weekend festivities, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.

The second overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft and the frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year award has shown otherworldly explosiveness attacking the rim, finishing plenty of drives with thunderous dunks, despite his slim frame at 6-foot-3 and 175 pounds.

The 20-year-old received an invitation from the league, but he's thinking it over:

“It’s something I’m thinking about,” Ja Morant told Yahoo Sports. “I haven’t made a decision yet.”

Morant has been cautious with his play since returning from a short absence after getting back spasms. He crashed into a cameraman after a wild finish at the rim, hurting his back and forcing him to sit for four games in early December.

Deciding to throw down a few dunks in the Slam Dunk Contest comes with some preparation and the consequent strain from soaring to the rim, but it also comes with praise and the opportunity to immortalize himself among the many players who have won the event.

The ROY frontrunner is averaging 17.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 6.6 assists in 31 games this season, leading his 2019 class in points and assists per game. Ja Morant's Grizzlies are a half-game away from the eighth and final spot of the Western Conference playoff picture.
