The NBA seems to be inching closer to playing the remainder of the regular season without fans in the stands as they grapple with how best to handle the coronavirus.

League officials met with the NBPA on Wednesday, with both sides acknowledging the possibility of playing in the absence of fans. The NBA will also have completed calls with all 30 owners and general managers sometime on Wednesday.

Additionally, the Golden State Warriors will host the Brooklyn Nets at an empty Chase Center on Thursday after the city of San Francisco expressed concerns about containment.

In short, things are moving quickly.

Memphis Grizzlies rookie point guard Ja Morant was rather poignant in his assessment of what it would be like to play in an arena devoid of any fans or noise.

Morant compared such an experience to “closed scrimmages:”

Players might be disappointed with the latest happenings, but it would not be surprising for the NBA to announce league-wide implementation of the “empty arena” strategy.

The coronavirus has caused alterations to sporting leagues and events around the world. Italy's Serie A soccer league was cancelled outright. Wednesday's Champions League matchup between Paris St.-Germain F.C. and Borssuia Dortmund was being played in an empty stadium.

Moreover, NCAA President Mark decided that both the men's and women's tournaments would be played without fans in attendance.

Perhaps the NBA will conclude this is the best way to ensure completion of the schedule without cancellation. Alternatively, Sam Amick of The Athletic also reported the league is considering pushing back the entire schedule.

In any case, Morant is surely just one of many players trying to find the words to describe the sheer oddity of the situation.
