The Memphis Grizzlies have announced that center Jonas Valanciunas will miss the remainder of the season with a right ankle injury.

Valanciunas suffered the injury on Sunday against the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center.

The Grizzlies have five games left in the regular season.

Memphis acquired Jonas Valanciunas from the Toronto Raptors at the February trade deadline in the Marc Gasol trade. The 26-year-old appeared in 17 games with the Grizzlies and averaged 19.9 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists while shooting 54.5 percent from the field, 27.8 percent from beyond the arc and 76.9 percent from the free-throw line.

Valanciunas has a player option worth $17 million for next season. The Grizzlies are building the team around Jaren Jackson Jr. Veteran point guard Mike Conley could be traded in the offseason. If Valanciunas wants to secure that nice $17 million- plus contract, he'll stay in Memphis. If the center wants to test the free agent market and sign with a contender, he'll decline the player option.

Valanciunas has career NBA averages of 12.1 points and 8.5 rebounds. He has expanded his range over the past couple of seasons, but he still does most of his damage in the paint. This Saturday against the Phoenix Suns, Valanciunas was a monster for the Grizzlies, as he put up 34 points and 20 rebounds to lead Memphis to a five-point win over the Arizona team.
