After being forced to sit out the entirety of last season due a torn Achilles, Mario Chalmers has now fully recovered from it and was signed earlier this summer by the Memphis Grizzlies. He was officially introduced by the team during a press conference on Tuesday, where general manager Chris Wallace also spoke about having him once again in their fold.

Wallace made it known that he thinks very highly of him, and even gave him a huge compliment about his game, via Ronald Tillery of The Commercial Appeal.

“Mario is one of the best big-game, clutch shooters in basketball,” Wallace said.

When it was the 31-year-old Kansas product’s turn to talk about making a comeback to the league, he proudly said that he has beaten the injury and will come back stronger than ever. He also added that he feels that signing with the Grizzlies is the right thing to do as he last saw action in the league with them.

“A lot of people say it’s career-ending,” Chalmers said of his injury.

“It was only right that I gave (the Grizzlies) the first opportunity at a healthy me.”

With David Fizdale now calling the plays for the Grizzlies, it may have been one of the reasons as well why he did not waste time in signing with the team. It’s no secret that the two had a good working relationship dating back to their days with the Miami Heat. Chalmers was then the starting point guard of the South Beach team, and helped them win back-to-back titles during their “Big 3”era.

Chalmers is expected to be eased back slowly into the lineup, in order for him to get his timing and conditioning back. He has the ability to play both guard positions, which will give their coaching staff the chance to field in more combinations. Should he be able to play like how he did earlier in his career, he could receive consistent playing time, and also have the opportunity for his contract to be guaranteed, or even be signed long term next summer.
