With his twelfth season now coming to a close, Memphis Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley is already looking ahead. The 31-year-old has certainly been one of the cornerstones of the Grizzlies franchise for years now, but with the team looking to rebuild, it seems that Conley's time in Memphis is also nearing its conclusion.

Speaking to Jonathan Abrams of Bleacher Report, Conley admitted that despite how much he loves the city and the organization, he remains open to the prospect of moving on, if the opportunity arises.

“It’s just really late in my career, and I want to have a chance to win,” Conley said. “I want to be able to contend and compete or have an opportunity. Whether that’s here or anywhere, I’d love to have that opportunity, but I love Memphis. I love being here. I love all of the things we’ve created and still are creating. But if they’re willing to trade me to help force that rebuild, then I am all for competing for championships and other things like that elsewhere.”

Conley's father and agent, Mike Conley Sr., completely agrees with his son's insight, stating that the objectives of Conley and the Grizzlies do not appear to be aligned anymore.

“In this day and age in the NBA, talent moves around so much that it’s almost like there’s no value to that identity that you have with the city,” he said. “So that part is tough, but that’s part of the business now.

“So, if the Grizzlies are in a rebuild, Mike can’t be around for that. It’s unfair to put him in that situation. He’s given too much to the program and to the city for him to have to be put through that. So, I hope whatever they end up doing, they do the right thing by him.”

Conley is currently on the third year of his five-year, $153 million deal. He is owed roughly $67 million over the next couple of years (with an early termination option in the 2020-21 season), so moving the 6-foot-1 guard to another team is not going to come easy for the Grizzlies.
