The Memphis Grizzlies announced Saturday that point guard Mike Conley will require season-ending injury, according to Michael Wallace of Grizzlies.com.

Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace announces in email moments ago to MVP season-ticket holders that Mike Conley will require season-ending surgery “to smooth a small bone protrusion” in his left heel. Conley is expected to make a full recovery ahead of training camp.

Conley suffered a an Achilles injury back in mid-November with the original report being that he was expected to be out at least two weeks. He hasn't played since and recently said that this season has been a nightmare for himself.

Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace made this announcement in an email to MVP season ticket holders, adding:

“Mike has been extremely diligent as we pursued multiple different approaches to alleviate the pain before deciding surgery was the best solution.”

Adding on the trade deadline: “(We) will remain aggressive in evaluating opportunities to improve our team, whether that’s through player development, the NBA draft, free agency or trades.”

The Grizzlies have had one of their worst seasons for the franchise in recent history, seemingly doomed to miss the postseason thanks in large part to injuries including Conley's.

The dysfunction in the first season without Zach Randolph led to the firing of head coach David Fizdale earlier this season as well as rumors swirling about star center Marc Gasol's future with the franchise.

Wallace added in the email that the team is committed to competing the rest of the season, although it is clear that they understand the reality in Memphis is now fully on rebuilding for the future.
